This city is full of wonderful opportunities for some great snaps, whether it be the hidden gems you find whilst exploring the hundreds of alleyways or the grand buildings in the CBD, Melbourne can be a photographers dream.

We take a look at the top 5 places in Melbourne to take photos. Whether you're a budding photographer or just looking for a hobby on the weekends, these 5 places are perfect for photography and are sure to bring out your creative side.

#5 The Yarra River

Extremely picturess at sunrise and sunset (pro tip: stay on the CBD side for sunset and the southgate side for sunrise). With the iconic princess bridge and the city skyline as a backdrop, the Yarra offers great shots for both avid and amatuer photographers, and even those of you just looking for your next Instagram post.

The beautiful colours of the Yarra come to life when photographing at these times of the day. And yes, this is probably the first time the colour of the Yarra has been described as ‘beautiful’ but if you are lucky enough to get a nice sunset/sunrise the sky dances off the water, producing beautiful shades of orange and blue for your photo.

#4 Hosier Lane

The hidden laneways and alleyways of Melbourne produce some of amazing street art and chances to take some great snaps. Hosier Lane and and the host of other alleyways covered in street art allow photographers to be a lot more creative compared to when you're taking photos of the city skyline, the Yarra etc. In fact, finding the right shot in these alleyways means exploring multiple angles and incorporating outside objects into the shot of the street art.

Getting the right shot in these setting may be a little tricky but strolling through these types of alleyways can produce excellent pictures and provide a fun afternoon.

#3 The Webb Bridge

This uniquely styled bridge offers a chance at some great pictures. The most effective shots are taken with a clear sunset, especially when the lights of the apartments illuminate the background and mix with the purple and oranges of the sky.

Great shots from inside and outside of the bridge create great angles of this futuristic design and a unique shot of Melbourne architecture not seen in any other part of the city.

#2 The city from above (Naked For Satan)

Sneak onto a rooftop, make the trip up the Eureka or even take a ride on the infamous Melbourne Star, wherever you can find some high ground get up there and get snapping!

This is another chance to get creative and explore the city from a different angel. If you’re looking to relax with a few drinks while taking your photos look no further than Naked For Satan, a bar on Brunswick street. Naked For Satan boasts one of the best views of Melbourne there is, incorporating the entire city skyline as a backdrop and the inner city suburbs as a the foreground. Perfect for panoramic shots and for those who enjoy a quite beverage or two.

As good as Naked For Satan’s view is there are many other photo opportunities from rooftops etc. so go out and explore and find that perfect shot.

#1 St Kilda Beach

Whether it’s sunrise, sunset, a sunny afternoon or even an overcast day, St Kilda Beach can produce great results. There are plenty of great spots along the beach. The pier, the sea baths and the variou bars and restaurants create a great atmosphere and provide great shots in both winter and summer. Early morning are probably your best chance at getting a good shot and will help avoid the large crowds the St Kilda beach can attract.

Again, be creative when looking for your shots, explore the beach, try different times of the day or even different times of the year to get that one great shot. St Kilda beach provides a multitude of potentially brilliant shots it just takes a little bit of adventure, which is half the fun of photography.
